Like
all official documents of the period, this one is in Latin. It is a text
recording the family history of five generations of serfs, and it is
included because it seems likely to be a very good match for a
description of Stentiford life in the13th, 14th and early 15th centuries.
This
was the time when, most likely, the family changed from being held in
serfdom by the Lord Abbot of Buckland Abbey (similar to Aylmer's
position) to becoming freedmen with enough substance to lease and work
their own land. It took a long time - five generations in Aylmer's case
or at least 125 years - but his family achieved it and so, in all
probability, did the Stentifords.
This
text comes from a really useful booklet called "Latin for Family
Historians" by Michael Gandy and is reproduced here with his
permission and that of the publishers, the Federation
of Family History Societies who have an extensive list of helpful
publications.
